Justice Jim Smith speaks

June 6, 2008

So, Justice Jim Smith gave an “impassioned” speech to the Mississippi Association for Justice last night.

It was the first time in many years that I’ve heard him speak, and I don’t remember him sounding like he did. I truly am not being critical here, but the man sounded so angry. Being a forceful speaker is one thing, but last night was a step or seven beyond forceful.

His two main points:

  1. He’s brought integrity to the bench.
  2. He outworks everyone.

That brings up two points of my own:

  1. Will the integrity he has brought to the bench lead him to denounce large political organizations that routinely run sleazy attack ads against candidates? (Yes, I’m talking about the U.S. Chamber.)
  2. He went on to say that he always will outwork everyone up there. That’s a pretty brazen statement.

More than ever, if people can meet both Smith and Kitch, then I know in my heart Jim Kitchens will be elected. Last night brought that point home more than ever.

Down in the Big Easy

June 5, 2008

Kitch and I arrived in the Big Easy last night after a stop over in Bay St. Louis to visit with sheriffs from across Mississippi.

Kitch spoke to Mississippi sheriffs at their annual convention. We then ate lunch with them, which was a treat. Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones was nice enough to introduce Kitch around. Not surprisingly, Kitch already knew a good number of the sheriffs, either from his past work as a D.A. or from visiting the district as he campaigns.

Here in New Orleans, Kitch is at the annual convention of the Mississippi Association for Justice. He’ll speak tonight at 6:30 p.m. Also scheduled to speak is his chief rival, Justice Jim Smith. This will be the first time the two share a speaking engagement.

Certainly, I hope the two have many, many opportunities to speak opposite one another and even to debate. A statesman-like exchange of ideas is most suitable for a race of this magnitude.
